Abstract
Purpose: The standard method of hernia repair for patients in childhood is high ligation, but there is no standard method in young adult males. The aim of this study is to compare high-ligation to other methods and to propose high ligation-only as a feasible procedure in young adult males.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 198 patients who underwent herniorrhaphy from January 2001 to August 2008. We also conducted telephone interviews with these patients. All patients were diagnosed as indirect inguinal hernia, and their age was from 18 to 25. We compared high-ligation-only to ¡¯posterior wall repair¡¯ herniorrhaphy by clinicopathologic features and operation results.

Results: A total of 79 patients were included in this study, and the other 119 patients were excluded due to follow-up loss or no response to telephone interviews. Forty patients underwent high-ligation-only and 39 patients were underwent ¡¯posterior wall repair¡¯ herniorrhaphy. There were no differences in complications and recurrences. However, the average operation time of high-ligation-only was shorter than that of the others methods.

Conclusion: High-ligation-only is proved as a safe and tolerable method for young adult males with indirect inguinal hernia.
